Create Your Statement – Fall Updates

Updates on Create Your Statement – Fall 2019

We’ve been busy spreading our mission, building relationships, teaching, and creating even more of a foundation within our non profit reach.

Evening En Blanc – https://projectbeautyshare.org/evening-en-blanc/

At the end of the Summer, our charity had the tremendous opportunity to support another non profit where the proceeds benefited Project Beauty Share. Project Beauty Share® collects personal hygiene, cosmetics and beauty products and distributes them through non profit organizations who serve women and families overcoming abuse, addiction, homelessness and poverty. They were able to raise $122,000 for their mission and we are so happy for them.

Back in May, Create Your Statement was honored to receive a grant from the Women Helping Women Foundation. They are hosting a giving reception in November and we would love to promote that for them here. See details on that event – https://whwfspokane.org/luncheon-events

May 2019 – Women Helping Women Luncheon

The Happy Girls Run in September was an amazing opportunity for us and our volunteers to cheer on runners in their element and combat dating abuse at the same time. Thank you so much always to Lay It Out Events for their tremendous efforts in making us a beneficiary each year.

We welcomed a new board member this quarter. Ed Hoffman is a lifelong resident of Spokane and a graduate of Whitworth University. When Ed is not hunting, golfing, or fishing, he can be found relaxing with his dogs Qwigley and Cora. Ed currently serves our community as the Senior Chaplain for the Spokane Police Department. Ed has been a supporter of Statement from our inception.

Our Strike Out Dating Abuse Event was a great night for a great cause. Our bowlers had a blast and we were able to enjoy the evening while Combating Dating Abuse

Spokane Unites To Stop Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is an epidemic in Spokane County. In fact, according to the Spokane Regional Health District, we have the highest reported rates of domestic violence in Washington: more than 3,900 confirmed victims each year (though the number of unreported victims may be as high as 13,500), representing 25% of all criminal cases. View more stats here.

Our Founder, Jenny Moeller and student Corrin visited with Stephanie Vigil of KHQ on this matter.

See the interview here.

Lately, our team at Create Your Statement has been working on supporting our community through leadership and education of dating abuse. We have worked with schools, young men and women and have been trying to expand to make an impact.

Recent projects include:

  • Working with local schools and teaching the REDFLAG and COMPASS classes
  • Teaching our curriculum to the Healing Lodge – a 45-bed adolescent residential chemical dependency treatment center in Spokane Valley, Washington that creates a foundation of healing for those who are struggling.
  • We worked with a sorority – Gamma Phi Beta on education and development and received a testimonial from one of the ladies:

I have had SO MANY girls come up to me and tell me how much they loved the program and the message you ladies shared with us! You ladies have made such an impact already and I can’t wait till you gals come back and touch more girls. I cannot thank you enough!

  • We spent an afternoon with the police force and girl scout troops talking about the prevention of dating abuse and why leadership is so important.
  • Our mission has reached the adults over at Artisansa non-profit agency providing services necessary for individual job development, employment support and employment opportunities in the community for persons with disabilities.
  • We had a blast being the beneficiary sponsor of Hot Summer Nights 2019 back in July with the Spokane CDA Living magazine.
  • We are working on the Happy Girls Run here in Spokane on September 21st, you will find more information above and within our website.

Happy Girls Run 2017

The 2017 Happy Girls Run Spokane was a huge success on a sunny Saturday in September. Over one thousand women, and even a few men, took to the trials at Riverside State Park and enjoyed the beautiful sights and sounds of nature at its finest. Music, smiles, and laughter were heard throughout the morning into the early afternoon.

There is such a sense of unity among the participants and the Statement volunteers. Of course, for the run to be truly happy, snacks were provided along the way at water stations. Energized student volunteers from Horizon Middle School stood side by side cheering, holding motivational signs, and working the water stations along with our amazing lead volunteers, Rhonda O’Dowd, Laurel Warner (and her son Jack Warner) Maddy Cunningham, Sidney Lemer, Allie Carver, Sandy McDonnell, Tina Swanson, and Angela & Bryse Warner.

A big thank you goes out to Mr. Mike Smith from Horizon Middle School for coordinating 20 student volunteers. Statement is honored to be the charitable beneficiary of Happy Girl’s Spokane.

Final race day finishers: 1041 runners Happy Girls Run Spokane. Here are some photos from the day:

The Spokesman Review Makes a Statement

We were thrilled to be featured in the Spokesman Review’s article “Teaching Teens About Dating Abuse.” The article highlighted the exact reason we exist – to stop the cycle of domestic violence before it starts. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Dating abuse among teens isn’t talked about much. Jenny Moeller wants to change that.

It’s a problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among high school students who dated, 21 percent of girls and 10 percent of boys experienced physical and/or sexual dating violence. Other groups estimate 1 in 3 teens experience abuse ranging from verbal to physical harm.

Moeller, founder of the Spokane group Create Your Statement, has built curriculum since 2013 for teaching teenagers how to recognize danger signs and empower them to avoid unhealthy relationships.
